Egyptian journalist (and very cool sister) Mona Eltahawy has just released a new video commentary of her piece  “happy Muslim men and women who confuse you.” For an enlightened and even witty commentary on the coverage of Muslims in the media (no pun intended) watch Mona’s video here.

  1. I am honestly happy she bravely showed up a few Angry Bearded Men and Black Shrouded women and told the world that is not who we are in general…Many would wish for that type of stereotype to continue- it suits their purposes…but even when I wear hijab and American clothes, I won’t put down the woman who decides for her own personal reasons not to wear the headgear- its’s a scarf! And there will be those who are better Muslims for not earing it; than those who adhere to it with such militancy- because militancy in this regard only serves to keep us separate away from each other…

Off my soap box; I already commented on Mona’s blog so keep smiling! 🙂

  2. I just finished watching this video and I absolutely adore Ms. Eltahawy for diligently working to express the MANY varied faces of the Arab/Eastern/South Asian and Muslim world. I love how she breaks it down to what it is, angry bearded men make for “sexy’ television and the silent woman covered against her will in head to toe black. You know, the man that is itching to blow you up so badly he almost gets some type of perverse sexual release from it (don’t mean to be crude but I could not think of another way to put it). And the woman that is silently screaming for us to run to her aide and liberate her from a repressive culture, society and religion that was forced on her because there is no way she could have possibly chosen to observe Islam and want to cover herself willingly…someone had to make her do it. I know I’m ranting I’ll stop now.

I know Ms. Eltahawy has written quite a bit on this. I hope she continues. This NEEDS to be put out there for more in the western world who, frankly, are just very ignorant on it. I have quite a few Muslim friends and acquaintances. None of them, male or female, are the “sexy” angry bearded bomb strapped man or the silent, personality-character-spiritlless woman. They’re a real chill bunch and really nice. And, SURPRISE!, there are far more Muslims like my friends than angry man and silent woman.
